How a Gentleman Makes Breakfast

You may have read my article about using a cast iron skillet to cook a steak. Well in addition to using it for steak, that skillet works wonders to make a fast but delicious breakfast that is perfect for a weekend morning.

My wife and I love home fries/potatoes in the morning along with bacon and Pillsbury rolls. Sometimes I am even able to surprise her with breakfast before she wakes up! It is really easy to do and has a very quick clean up!

Ingredients:

  1. Bacon
  2. Pillsbury crescent rolls
  3. 2 potatoes
  4. Salt
  5. Pepper
  6. Paprika

Gear:

  1. 10.25″ Lodge Skillet
  2. Fork to flip the bacon
  3. Paper plates and paper towels for easy cleanup
  4. Grease container
  5. Microwave
  6. Cutting board
  7. Sharp knife
  8. Potato Peeler
  9. Oven

Prep:

I usually start with the potatoes. Wash them off and peel them into paper  towels for easy cleanup. Put them on a cutting board and dice them into very small pieces. Put them all into a bowl and microwave them for 2 minutes. This ensures a thorough cooking and also saves time on cooking them! Set these aside. Set Oven to 375 degrees for rolls.

Next turn the heat to medium on your stove top with the cast iron skillet. Place bacon in the skillet, as much as your heart desires. (All the bacon) Take the bacon off once it is cooked and lay them on a paper plate with a paper towel to absorb the grease. (Tip – I usually cook bacon wearing a long sleeve shirt due to the hot grease popping on the skillet. Your skillet is now full of grease. Dump half of the grease into the grease container and leave the rest of the bacon grease in the skillet! This creates an amazing crust on the potatoes! Put the skillet back on the burner and get ready to cook potatoes!

Dump the potatoes into the skillet and make sure to turn them every minute and a half or so. This is the point where I will put salt, pepper and paprika on top the potatoes and mix it all up. At the same time I start my potatoes I usually put the crescent rolls in the oven since they take 10 minutes to cook. When your potatoes are golden brown you are ready to serve. I usually just put the cast iron skillet on a potholder right at the table and let people serve  themselves from there. Everyone gets there bacon and 2-3 rolls.

This breakfast is awesome, leaves you with energy for the day, and gives you another chance to use that awesome cast iron skillet!

Cleanup:

This is the easy part because we used paper products for everything. Turn your sink to hot and clean the skillet while it is still hot. (Remember no soap, we want those flavors!) Season the skillet with olive oil and put it back where it goes! Put the fork, bowl and cutting board in the dishwasher and wipe down the stove from the bacon grease.

That’s honestly it! I wanted to keep this article short because the whole point is that this breakfast is simple but amazing! Its a perfect way to start your weekend!
