One of my favorite things to do is to get my haircut. I love the experience of going to a barber, relaxing in the chair and taking in all the aftershave scents and talking with my barber about everything. I have been to several barbershops but I keep coming back to Sepi’s Sharp Styles in Ephrata because time and time again I walk out feeling like a new man. It doesn’t matter if you have the most expensive hair product to try to tame your hair, if it is not cut right it will not look good. I am looking forward to doing a post on here to review some of the best barbershops in Lancaster county.
Today however I wanted to talk about 3 different products I use in order to maintain the hard part comb-over style that I use for my hair. There are pros and cons for each which I will fully dive into. Before I dive into the 3 products, let’s talk about the prep needed before using any product.
Prep work:
I used to get so frustrated trying to style my hair in the morning because I would use a ton of product and no matter what I did, my hair would still not do what I wanted it to. The honest truth is that if you blow dry your hair and use a boars hair brush to comb your hair over, you will be satisfied with the end result 99 percent of the time. The heat from the hair dryer trains your hair to go where you want it and it helps keep your hair that way. Once you have the hair looking the way you want it then it is time for some product.
Choices, choices, choices
The problem with going to a store nowadays is that the number of choices for styling agents can be overwhelming. I have tried countless numbers of products and I have finally settled on 3 that work for me. It depends on the type of sheen you are looking for, the type of hold you are looking for, and the amount of time it will take to get the product out of your hair when you are done with it.
Choice No. 1:
AXE Clean Cut Look – I know, I know. Really? AXE? The stuff we used to spray in the locker room in high school? Admittedly this one is not my favorite but it does its job and it does it well. The hold on this product is really solid. The price is also right. You can get a 2 pack for only $11 on Amazon! So if you are on a budget but want to maintain the slick look, this may be for you. This product has moderate shine to it. This product is difficult to remove from your hair at the end of the day.
Choice No. 2:
Old Spice Pomade – This one I use when I am going for a matte finish. It holds all day long and the price is also right although a little but more expensive than the AXE Clean Cut. You can get a 2 pack on Amazon for $15.99. The smell is strong so that may be a bother to some but I don’t mind the smell of it. This one is more of a paste and does go on white, but after combing it through your hair it does go away. This product tends to stay in your hair and need a thorough shower to get it out.
Choice No. 3:
Layrite – All types – This is my holy grail for hair pomades. You can buy whatever type of sheen you want. It will last all day and it is water soluble which means it will rinse right out of your hair at the end of the day. Okay so all these pros, whats the con? Price. Unfortunately if you go this route it is $18 for one 4.25 oz. container! That being said I can usually make a container of Layrite last a month or more if I am not over zealous with application.
Try, try and try again
I think the best thing a gent can do is try something until you find the best fit for you. Sometimes when I am on a super budget I will go to the first and second pomades on this list and when I want to treat myself a little I will go for the Layrite.
That’s all from me for today, let me know what type of pomade helps you get through the day looking dapper!
